Elden Ring Build Tier List: Strong Archetypes To Plan

A grounded look at popular Elden Ring build archetypes and the stat spreads that make each one work when you plan it out.

Tier lists are contentious, and any honest one for Elden Ring comes with a caveat: almost every build can clear the whole game, and balance shifts with each patch. What a tier list is genuinely useful for is spotting which archetypes are the most forgiving to plan and play — the ones with efficient stat spreads, reliable damage and few glaring weaknesses.

This guide ranks popular build archetypes by how easy they are to plan around, not by some absolute power ceiling. Every archetype here is viable; the tiers reflect efficiency and consistency. Load any of them as a starting point in the build planner and shape them to your taste.

How these tiers are judged

Three things push an archetype up the list: stat efficiency (few wasted points for a given power level), consistency (reliable damage across many encounters), and ease of planning (clear priorities that are hard to get wrong). An archetype can be extremely strong in expert hands yet sit lower here if it is stat-hungry or punishing to plan.

Nothing in the lower tiers is bad. A B-tier build here will still carry you through the entire game. Treat the ranking as a guide to where the smooth, beginner-friendly options are versus the ones that reward deeper knowledge.

Top tier: the safe, efficient picks

Quality (Strength/Dexterity split). By investing in both physical stats you unlock the widest weapon pool and never feel locked out of an upgrade you find. It is stat-hungry but forgiving, and the Vagabond or Samurai make efficient bases. See the hybrid builds guide.

Dexterity bleed / Arcane bleed. Status builds that stack blood loss deal a burst of damage independent of raw scaling, which trivialises many tough enemies. Arcane raises status buildup, so pairing Arcane with Dexterity is a classic efficient package covered in the Arcane guide.

Strong tier: reliable and straightforward

Pure Strength. Big weapons, big poise, and the two-handing bonus that stretches your Strength further. It is simple to plan — Vigor, Endurance, Strength — and very durable, though slower than Dexterity. The Strength guide has the details.

Pure Dexterity. Fast weapons, quick recovery and improved cast speed for hybrids. Slightly less staggering power than Strength but more mobility and combo potential, as the Dexterity guide explains.

Intelligence sorcery. Ranged glintstone damage that can delete groups and stagger bosses, at the cost of a healthy Mind investment and some fragility if Vigor is neglected. The Intelligence guide covers the Mind balance.

Solid tier: powerful with the right knowledge

Faith incantations. Enormous variety, from healing to lightning to fire, and strong utility. Faith builds can be a little slower to come online and want good Mind and Vigor, but they are among the most flexible casters, as the Faith guide shows.

Spellblade hybrids (Dexterity/Intelligence). Melee with sorcery support is stylish and effective, but splitting across two damage lines raises your rune level for the same power. The hybrid guide explains how to keep it lean.

A note on "worst" builds

There is no archetype in Elden Ring that cannot win. What lands lower on a tier list is usually a build that spreads across too many stats, so it needs a high rune level to reach the same effectiveness as a focused build. If you love the fantasy of a stat-hungry hybrid, play it — just expect to level higher.

Planning any archetype efficiently

Whatever tier you pick, the planning process is the same: secure Vigor, cover Mind and Endurance for your needs, then invest your remaining levels into one or two damage stats up to their efficient soft caps. The soft caps guide tells you where those windows are.

Model your chosen archetype in the planner, check that the rune level fits your goal (especially for capped multiplayer builds), and save a couple of variants to compare. The best build is the one you enjoy that also spends its runes wisely — and every archetype on this list can be exactly that.

Matching a tier to your goals

The right build for you depends on what you are optimising for. If you want the smoothest possible first playthrough, lean toward the top and strong tiers — quality, bleed, pure Strength or Dexterity — because they forgive mistakes and deal reliable damage. If you want a specific fantasy, like a lightning-hurling prophet or a spellblade, play that archetype regardless of tier; every one on the list clears the game.

Tiers also shift with your own skill. An expert can make a lower-tier, stat-hungry hybrid look dominant, while a newcomer benefits more from a forgiving top-tier build. Read the list as a guide to ease and efficiency, then weight it against your own experience and the kind of character you actually want to play.

Evolving a build over a playthrough

Few characters stay in one archetype forever. A common arc is to start with a forgiving quality or Strength build to learn the game, then respec into a more specialised bleed, caster or hybrid build once you have found the weapons and spells you love. Because a single Larval Tear lets you rebuild your stats, your tier-list choice is a starting point, not a life sentence.

Plan each stage in the planner and save it, so your progression from beginner-friendly to specialised is deliberate. That way you get the best of both worlds: an easy early game and a finely tuned endgame character, without ever locking yourself out of a direction you later want to explore. The respec guide shows how to rehearse each transition.
