Arcane is the most misunderstood attribute in Elden Ring. Many players write it off as a treasure-finding stat, but it quietly powers some of the game's strongest builds by boosting status buildup and scaling a whole family of weapons and spells. This guide explains what Arcane really does and how to plan a build around it in the build planner.
The key insight is that Arcane rarely works alone. It usually pairs with Dexterity, Strength or Faith, feeding status effects like bleed and poison while a second stat carries base scaling. Understanding that partnership is the whole art of an Arcane build.
What Arcane actually scales
Arcane does three notable things: it raises item discovery (your chance of rare drops), it increases the buildup rate of status effects on many weapons, and it provides base scaling for Arcane-scaling armaments and certain incantations. The status-buildup effect is the one that makes Arcane build-defining, because a fast bleed or rot proc deals a chunk of damage independent of raw weapon scaling.
On weapons that scale bleed or poison with Arcane, more Arcane means the status bar fills faster, triggering its burst of damage sooner and more often. Against high-health enemies, that can outpace a pure scaling build entirely, which is why Arcane bleed sits high on the build tier list.
The Arcane partnership
Because many Arcane weapons still need a second stat to meet requirements and provide base damage, most Arcane builds are hybrids. The two common pairings are Arcane/Dexterity — fast weapons that stack bleed quickly — and Arcane/Faith, which powers dragon communion incantations and Faith/Arcane weapons. Decide your pairing first, then split investment between the two stats.
A typical Arcane bleed spread might be 40 Vigor, modest Mind and Endurance, a Dexterity value to meet weapon requirements, and heavy Arcane for status buildup and scaling. The exact split depends on your weapon, so check its requirements on a current wiki. The hybrid guide covers keeping two-stat builds efficient.
Discovery is a bonus, not a reason
The item-discovery boost is a nice perk for farming rare drops, but it is never a reason to build Arcane on its own. Build Arcane for status and scaling; enjoy the extra drops as a side benefit.
Choosing a base class
The Bandit is the standout, starting with 14 Arcane, the highest of any class, and a low overall level that leaves room to shape the build. It suits Arcane/Dexterity bleed especially well. For an Arcane/Faith direction, the Prophet's high Faith with decent Arcane can also work. The starting class guide compares your options.
Starting as the Bandit means fewer early levels spent reaching a workable Arcane value, freeing points for Vigor and your secondary stat.
Finishing and refining
Balance is everything for Arcane: enough of your secondary stat to wield your weapon and provide base damage, enough Arcane to drive status buildup, and a solid Vigor pool underneath. Because you are investing in two damage-related stats, watch your rune level closely and lean on soft caps to avoid overspending, as the soft caps guide describes.
Model the spread in the planner, confirm the level fits your goal, and save it. Done right, an Arcane build shreds tough enemies with status procs while a second stat keeps its everyday damage respectable — a combination that stays strong from early game to endgame.
Playstyle and status pressure
An Arcane build wins by applying pressure the target cannot ignore. As your weapon builds up a status like bleed, the enemy takes a burst of damage the moment the bar fills, independent of your raw scaling. Against high-health bosses, repeated procs can outpace a pure scaling build, which is the whole appeal of the archetype.
The playstyle rewards fast, repeated hits to fill the status bar quickly, which is why Arcane so often pairs with Dexterity weapons. Manage your positioning to land enough strikes for a proc, then capitalise on the burst. The Dexterity guide covers the fast-weapon side of this partnership.
Endgame Arcane targets
A finished Arcane build balances three things: enough of your secondary stat (usually Dexterity or Faith) to wield your weapon and provide base damage, enough Arcane to drive status buildup and scaling, and a Vigor pool that keeps you in the fight. Because you invest in two damage-related stats, watch your rune level and lean on soft caps to stay efficient.
If your level climbs too high, commit harder to whichever stat carries your main damage and treat the other as a requirement-meeter. Model both versions in the planner and compare their levels, exactly as the optimizer guide recommends. Done well, an Arcane build melts tough enemies with status while keeping its everyday damage respectable.
