Elden Ring Intelligence Build: Sorcery Stat Planning

How to plan an Intelligence caster, balance Mind for FP, and keep enough survivability while leaning into sorceries.

An Intelligence build casts glintstone sorceries, raining ranged damage on enemies and staggering bosses from a safe distance. It is one of the most satisfying archetypes when planned well, but it demands a bit more balancing than a pure melee build because you are juggling a casting stat, a focus pool, and survivability at once.

This guide explains how to plan an Intelligence caster in the build planner: how much Intelligence to invest, how to size Mind for FP, and how to avoid the classic mistake of building a glass cannon that dies to a single hit.

Intelligence is your damage, Mind is your fuel

Intelligence scales your sorceries and the staves that cast them, so it is your primary damage stat. But sorceries cost FP, and FP comes from Mind. A caster with high Intelligence and no Mind runs dry after a handful of spells, so the two must grow together. The balance depends on how spell-reliant you are: a battlemage who also swings a sword needs less Mind than a pure caster who does nothing but sling spells.

A commonly cited convenience point is 38 Mind, which lines up with a full focus flask refill for many builds. You do not have to hit exactly that, but it is a reasonable target for a dedicated caster. Size Mind to comfortably cover your spell rotation between flask sips.

Do not neglect Vigor

The single biggest error new casters make is dumping everything into Intelligence and Mind while leaving Vigor low. A caster still gets hit, and low Vigor means one mistake ends the fight. Treat 40 Vigor as a floor for any serious Intelligence build, even if it means slightly less Intelligence early on. The beginner mistakes guide ranks this as a top pitfall.

A workable midgame spread might be 40 Vigor, 30-plus Mind, some Endurance for light armour and a backup weapon, and Intelligence pushed into its efficient window. Strength and Dexterity stay near base, meeting only your staff and melee backup requirements.

Staves and requirements

Different staves have different Intelligence requirements and scaling, and some sorceries have their own stat gates. Plan your Intelligence to meet the requirements of the spells and staff you intend to use, then invest further for scaling. Confirm the exact numbers on a current wiki, since spell data can change between patches.

Choosing a base class

The Astrologer is the obvious pick, starting with 16 Intelligence and 15 Mind — the most efficient sorcery foundation in the game. The Prisoner is the alternative if you want a Dexterity/Intelligence spellblade, since it opens with strong values in both. The starting class guide compares them.

Starting as the Astrologer means your first several levels are not spent catching up on Intelligence, which frees them for Vigor and Mind — exactly the stats a caster most needs early.

Finishing and refining

Take Intelligence into its efficient scaling window rather than to the hard cap, keep Mind sized to your rotation, and hold Vigor at a safe level. Once those three are set, extra points go to Endurance or more Vigor rather than the flat tail of Intelligence. The soft caps guide shows where to stop.

Model the full spread in the planner, check the rune level, and save it. A balanced Intelligence build melts groups from range and punishes bosses through openings — and with a solid Vigor pool behind it, it survives long enough to do so consistently.

Playstyle and spell selection

An Intelligence caster is at its best controlling space. A good sorcery loadout mixes a cheap, spammable spell for chip damage and stagger, a heavier hitter for openings, and a utility option for tricky situations. Managing FP between these is the rhythm of the build, which is why Mind investment and flask management matter as much as raw Intelligence.

Because casting leaves you briefly committed, positioning is everything. Strong Intelligence players fight at range, punish openings from a safe distance, and keep a melee backup for when enemies close in. Planning a modest Dexterity value can speed your casts and support that backup weapon, nudging the build toward the spellblade territory covered in the hybrid guide.

Endgame Intelligence targets

A finished sorcery build wants Intelligence in its efficient scaling window, Mind sized to sustain your rotation between flask sips, and Vigor held at a safe floor of at least 40. Endurance stays modest, enough for light armour and a backup weapon, since casters rarely want to be weighed down.

Resist the urge to sacrifice Vigor for a little more Intelligence — a dead caster deals no damage, and the soft caps mean those extra Intelligence points give less than they appear to. Plan the balance in the planner, confirm the rune level, and you will have a caster that dominates from range while surviving the hits that do land.
