Elden Ring gives you ten starting classes, and new players often agonise over the choice as if it locks in their character forever. It does not. Every class can become nearly any build once you start leveling, and a single Larval Tear lets you redistribute all your stats later. What the starting class actually decides is how efficient your early levels are and what gear you begin with.
Still, efficiency is worth planning for, especially if you care about hitting a precise rune level for PvP or co-op. This guide compares all ten origins by their starting stats and explains which builds each one supports best, so you can pick the most economical foundation in the build planner.
How to think about starting stats
By level 10, every class has the same total of 89 attribute points — the differences are only in where those points sit and how many levels the class has already spent. A class is "efficient" for your build when its starting spread already leans toward the stats you want and keeps your dump stats low. A single point of Arcane you will never use is a wasted level you could have put into Vigor.
There is also a floor to consider: the lowest possible level for a given target build differs by class. If your build needs low values in a class's already-low stats, that class saves you levels. This matters most for tightly capped PvP builds and barely at all for a relaxed solo playthrough.
The melee-focused classes
The Vagabond starts at level 9 with the highest Vigor in the game at 15, plus strong Strength and Dexterity. It is the most forgiving beginner pick and an excellent base for quality builds that split Strength and Dexterity. The Hero starts at level 7 with 16 Strength and 14 Vigor, making it the cleanest foundation for pure Strength and colossal weapons.
The Warrior opens at level 8 with 16 Dexterity, ideal for fast weapons and dual wielding. The Bandit starts low at level 5 with 14 Arcane, the best base for Arcane and bleed builds, and its low starting level leaves the most room to shape the character yourself. The Samurai is a well-rounded level 9 origin with high Endurance and Dexterity that many players treat as an all-purpose pick.
Quick melee recommendations
For pure Strength, take the Hero. For Dexterity, take the Warrior. For a Strength–Dexterity quality split, take the Vagabond or Samurai. For Arcane and bleed, take the Bandit. Load any of these into the planner and you will see the starting spread reflected immediately.
The caster and hybrid classes
The Astrologer starts at level 6 with 16 Intelligence and 15 Mind, the obvious choice for sorcery. The Prophet starts at level 7 with 16 Faith and healthy Mind, built for incantations. The Prisoner is a Dexterity–Intelligence hybrid at level 9, a strong base for spellblade and battlemage characters. The Confessor, at level 10, is a balanced Faith hybrid with equal Strength and Dexterity, suited to paladin-style builds.
Then there is the Wretch: level 1, every stat at 10, and nothing else. It is the ultimate blank slate. For a precisely planned build where you want total control from the very first level — especially low-level PvP characters — the Wretch wastes nothing because it starts with nothing.

The honest truth about class choice
For most players, the difference between a "perfect" starting class and a merely good one is a handful of levels over an entire playthrough — practically nothing. Pick the class whose weapon and starting spells appeal to you, and you will be fine. Reserve strict efficiency planning for characters where the exact rune level genuinely matters, like meta-level PvP builds.
If that is you, plan the target spread in the calculator first, then try it on each candidate class and compare the resulting rune levels. The class that produces the lowest level for your required stats is your most efficient origin. For competitive builds, the PvP build planning guide explains why that efficiency is worth chasing.
Class choice for repeat characters
If you plan to run several builds over time, two classes stand out for their all-round efficiency: the Vagabond and the Samurai. Both have clean stat spreads with few wasted points and high enough physical stats to pivot between many builds with a single respec. Players who make lots of characters often default to one of these as a comfortable, flexible base.
The Wretch deserves a mention for the opposite reason. Starting at level 1 with everything at 10, it gives you total control and zero wasted points, which makes it the theoretical best base for a precisely min-maxed build. The trade-off is that you begin with almost nothing and must earn every level, so it suits experienced planners rather than newcomers.
Keepsakes and the bigger picture
Your starting choice includes more than a class. The keepsake you select at character creation can smooth the early game — a common recommendation is the item that grants an early stat-boosting seed — though none of these choices are permanent build-definers. They shape your opening hours, not your endgame.
Keep the whole decision in perspective. The class sets your efficient starting point and your opening gear; leveling and respeccing do the rest. Plan the build you want in the planner, pick the class that reaches it most efficiently, choose a keepsake that eases your start, and step into the Lands Between without overthinking a choice you can largely undo later.
